USA vs Belgium: Nearly Identical Kits Made Friendly Match Almost Unwatchable

The United States, one of the co-hosts for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, suffered a significant 5-2 defeat to Belgium in a friendly match this week. This result comes two and a half months before the major tournament, as part of the scheduled international friendlies.

The U.S. national football team, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, is under pressure to generate enthusiasm among local supporters. Fans expect the team to at least match its best World Cup performance – reaching the quarter-finals in 2002. Since then, their best result has been the Round of 16, and they even missed the 2018 edition. However, the performance witnessed last Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta offered little cause for optimism.

Compounding the disappointing score, the match itself was borderline unwatchable for television audiences. Inexplicably, both teams played in nearly identical kits. Belgium sported light blue with pink accents, while the United States wore red and white stripes. While both teams were debuting their new uniforms for the first time, fans watching at home struggled immensely to differentiate players without relying solely on their shorts. This design oversight sparked widespread anger among viewers, prompting even Belgian television to issue an apology to its audience.
