Valentina Shevchenko stands as one of the most accomplished athletes to emerge from Kyrgyzstan. Her name is synonymous with excellence in combat sports, boasting an impressive record of 11 world championships in Muay Thai and three titles in kickboxing and K-1.
In the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) octagon, Valentina has twice secured the flyweight championship, marking her as the first fighter from Kyrgyzstan to achieve such a prestigious feat. As of June 2025, she holds the top position in the overall UFC rankings, irrespective of weight class, a testament to her unparalleled skill and enduring dominance in the global realm of mixed martial arts.
Childhood and the Genesis of Her Sporting Career
Born on March 7, 1988, in Frunze (now Bishkek), Kyrgyzstan, Valentina was profoundly influenced by her mother, Elena Shevchenko, a master of sports and the president of Kyrgyzstan’s Thai Boxing Federation. Elena served as a true inspiration, instilling in Valentina a deep passion for martial arts. Her elder sister, Antonina Shevchenko, also dedicated her life to the discipline.
Valentina commenced her training at the tender age of five, initially focusing on taekwondo before transitioning to Muay Thai and kickboxing. Even during her teenage years, her exceptional speed, precision, and dedication set her apart from her peers. Her long-standing coach, Pavel Fedotov, who has been a constant presence throughout her professional journey, quickly recognized her unique potential.
Distinguished Career in Kickboxing and Muay Thai
Shevchenko’s career in these striking arts was nothing short of phenomenal. Between 2003 and 2015, she amassed over 90 victories in both amateur and professional bouts, including eight technical knockouts and two clean knockouts. Her first defeat in kickboxing occurred in 2008 against Debbie Urquhart (WFCA), followed by losses to Bai Ling in 2010 and Kong Wang in 2015.
During this period, Shevchenko earned eight gold medals at the IFMA World Championships (in 2003, 2006–2010, 2012, and 2014) and triumphed at the IMFA Royal World Cup in 2015.
Notably, across these tournaments, she defeated future UFC flyweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk on three separate occasions. These remarkable achievements solidify Shevchenko’s status as one of the most celebrated female athletes in the history of Thai boxing.
Transition to MMA: The Road to the UFC
Valentina launched her professional MMA career at just 15 years old, debuting on April 21, 2003, at the Kyrgyz Federation Kulatuu tournament against Eliza Aidaralieva. She secured a victory via technical knockout in the second round.
In subsequent appearances across regional promotions in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and South Korea, she achieved a streak of six consecutive early finishes, all by first-round knockout. In 2006, she temporarily paused her MMA pursuits to concentrate on Thai boxing and kickboxing.
Resuming her MMA career in 2010, Shevchenko made her first U.S. appearance at the C3 Fights tournament in Oklahoma, where she faced future UFC title contender Liz Carmouche. Despite dominating the initial round, the fight was halted by the doctor due to an injury sustained from a controversial illegal strike. As the referee did not call a foul, Carmouche was awarded a technical knockout victory. Following this, Shevchenko took another hiatus, continuing to compete in amateur Thai boxing.
In 2013, under the banner of the South American organization MMA Fusion FC, Shevchenko had two successful fights within two months, both ending in technical knockout victories. A year later, she signed with Legacy FC, where on February 27, 2015, she defeated Jen Finney by unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 30–27) at Legacy Fighting Championship 39, steadily advancing her journey to the pinnacle of professional MMA.
