An initiative has been launched in Warsaw aiming to officially designate an oak tree as a nature monument. This tree holds symbolic significance due to its role in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Located directly across from the CD Projekt RED studio office, the tree served as the real-world model for the game`s memorable “Hanging Tree” and has consequently become something of an unofficial symbol for the acclaimed RPG.
The campaign was spearheaded by city councilor Jan Mencwel and Polish Tourist Society guide Mateusz Nowicki. They have formally submitted a petition proposing that the tree be named “Geralt`s Oak” and be granted official protected status.
As of the time of publication, the petition has garnered over 22.5 thousand signatures. This effort is being conducted in anticipation of the tenth anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt`s release, scheduled for May 18, 2025. The initiators emphasize that recognizing the oak as a nature monument would not only symbolize respect for the game, which has significantly impacted Polish culture and the gaming industry, but also serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of preserving natural heritage within urban environments.
