Wayne Rooney Weighs TV Career While Considering Return to Management

Wayne Rooney, the former England and Manchester United captain, is being courted for a prominent pundit role by Amazon Prime as he deliberates his next career move in football.

The 39-year-old recently made his debut on Amazon’s Champions League coverage, impressing viewers with his candid insights. This follows his appearances on Sky Sports and BBC Sport, where he has proven to be a popular analyst.

Despite losing Premier League rights after this season, Amazon will continue broadcasting Champions League matches until 2027, offering Rooney flexibility in his commitments.

Rooney’s managerial career has included stints at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City, and most recently Plymouth Argyle. In a recent interview, he expressed openness to returning to management, but emphasized the importance of finding the right opportunity.

“I’m open to returning to management, but it needs to be the perfect fit,” Rooney stated. “I’m not in a rush and I’m exploring various options. Each club I’ve managed has presented unique challenges, providing me with valuable experiences to draw upon.”

Currently, Rooney is in Dubai for a half-term coaching engagement with Football Escapes, working with young players at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. This role aligns him with other former Premier League stars like Michael Owen and Mark Noble who are also involved with the company.

Rooney’s Amazon debut was well-received, partly due to his relaxed demeanor and self-deprecating humor. His ability to connect with audiences and provide insightful commentary suggests he could have a promising future in broadcasting if he chooses to pursue that path.
