Who hasn’t experienced that agonizing desire for the ground to simply open up and swallow them whole on a golf course? Golf, a game of precision and patience, can be utterly unforgiving when things go awry.
Whether it’s an errant hook, a complete air-shot, a round that spiraled into chaos, or encountering the dreaded ‘shanks’ – we all have had those utterly disastrous moments on the green that are impossible to erase from memory.
In this collection, we recount some of our most memorable course catastrophes – incidents we’ve desperately tried, and failed, to forget. Let’s delve into a few of our standout golf nightmares…
Golf Disasters: Tom’s Open Qualifying Blunder
Tom shared a particularly painful memory from two summers ago during Open Qualifying. “I enter Open Qualifying every year,” he began. “This particular year, I decided to change my usual strategy of picking the nearest venue and instead chose Goswick – a classic links course located two and a half hours away. It’s an incredible course nestled between the dunes.”
He continued, “I arrived around 10:30 AM, thinking it was perfect timing to get an hour of practice in before my 12:10 PM tee time. However, when I gave my name to the car park attendant, he couldn’t find me on the list for that time. Puzzled, I checked my phone only to realize I was looking at the previous year’s start sheet. My actual tee time for this year was 10:20 AM. I had arrived at 10:40 AM, missing my slot by 20 minutes and resulting in immediate disqualification.”
Golf Disasters: Steve’s Unwanted Captain’s Day Record
This next tale involves a club record, but certainly not one anyone would aspire to hold. It was 2017, at Sandburn Hall in York, and I was about to perform the ceremonial drive-in for my year as Captain.
I’m prone to overthinking, and I must have mentally replayed that first shot thousands of times before finally stepping onto the 1st tee. In the weeks leading up to the ceremony, I had also mysteriously developed a destructive snap hook. A coincidence? I doubt it, but I simply couldn’t get the ball airborne.
The morning of the ceremony, I spent about an hour and a half on the driving range, hitting ball after ball, desperately trying to break the curse. In hindsight, I probably should have been in the bar, calming my nerves with a couple of smooth beers. The outcome couldn’t have been any worse.
Instead, I arrived at the tee and hit the ball a mere 96 yards. It barely left the ground. To make matters worse, we had organized a charity sweepstake beforehand, where participants guessed the drive’s yardage – and the list of options started at 100 yards. So not only did I butcher the drive, I also ruined the sweepstake!
Golf Disasters: Steve’s Pity High-Five at a Pro-Am
It seems I have a knack for hitting shots poorly in front of crowds. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to play in the Portuguese Masters Pro-Am on the Old Course in Vilamoura.
The format was Texas Scramble, which is arguably the most forgiving form of golf. There’s virtually no pressure, as you have three other people with you on every single shot. Yet, did I play good golf? No, it was truly awful. I topped my first shot off the 1st tee, and things didn’t improve from there. I tried to convince myself the sandy turf didn’t suit my game, but I ended up scuffing almost every ball.
Our professional partner was Nacho Elvira, a multiple DP World Tour winner and an all-around lovely guy. But when I finally managed to hit a green on the 15th hole, Nacho was so genuinely surprised that he gave me a high-five – a pity high-five! It just goes to show how terrible I was playing that day.
