Ai Ogura Makes History: First Japanese MotoGP Winner in 22 Years; Martín Takes Championship Lead

The MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday delivered significant moments. Ai Ogura achieved a historic win, marking the first time a Japanese rider has triumphed in a MotoGP Grand Prix in 22 years.

Raúl Fernández secured second place, with Jorge Martín finishing third at the TT Circuit Assen. In an unexpected turn, Aprilia’s satellite team, Trackhouse, outperformed the factory team, as both their riders, Ogura and Fernández, finished ahead of Jorge Martín and Marco Bezzecchi. Bezzecchi crashed and was taken to the hospital. Ogura made decisive overtakes, passing Martín on lap 18 and Fernández on lap 20 to claim a remarkable victory. This win propels Ogura to fourth in the overall standings, ahead of Marc Márquez.

The 25-year-old Trackhouse rider, Ogura, had previously made history in May by becoming the first Japanese rider to stand on the podium since Katsuyuki Nakasuga at the 2012 Valencia Grand Prix, where he finished third. His current victory makes him the first Japanese rider to win a premier class race since Makoto Tamada at the 2004 Japanese Grand Prix.

On a concerning note, Marco Bezzecchi suffered a serious crash on the second lap while attempting to overtake Marc Márquez, who ultimately finished seventh. Bezzecchi, the second Aprilia rider, was transported to Groningen Hospital for medical evaluations and thankfully sustained no severe injuries.

Following the race, Jorge Martín has taken the lead in the MotoGP championship with 193 points. He holds a seven-point advantage over Marco Bezzecchi (186 points). Fabio Di Giannantonio is in third place with 177 points, while Ogura sits fourth with 168 points. Marc Márquez has dropped to fifth with 153 points, and Raúl Fernández is sixth with 138 points.
