Expedition 33 Makes Video Game History by Clinching All Top Five Game of the Year Awards
It is generally accepted that the five most important and prestigious “Game of the Year” awards are the Ultimate Game of the Year from the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Games Awards (we’ll assume Gamereactor’s award ranks sixth).
It has only happened once that a game won all these awards; that was Baldur’s Gate III, which again, was an exceptionally good role-playing game. But… you have, of course, already understood from reading our title what we are about to tell you next, because this improbable feat has happened again.
Yesterday, the BAFTA Games Awards took place – and the winner turned out to be the same game that had previously won the Ultimate Game of the Year from the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, and the Game Developers Choice Awards for Best Game of 2025. We are, of course, talking about the extraordinarily well-made, innovative, stunningly beautiful, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which also won our Game of the Year award (and virtually everyone else’s).
This means two games have entered history with this accomplishment, both from smaller developers and publishers. This year, a certain title from Rockstar is likely in a very strong position to sweep most awards, but competition is fierce, and it remains to be seen if Grand Theft Auto VI will ultimately live up to expectations.
