Bayern established a narrow 3-2 lead against Manchester United in the opening leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford. Manchester United twice clawed back to equalize after Harder's well-taken goals, but Tanikawa sealed the win for Bayern with a decisive late strike.

The visitors enjoyed a dream start, opening the scoring within the first 90 seconds. Pernille Harder reacted quickest to Arianna Caruso’s long pass, beating Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier to the ball before clinically slotting it home. Despite having spoken pre-match about her childhood affection for Manchester United, the 33-year-old Dane showed no sentimentality on the iconic Old Trafford pitch. The experienced striker had already found the net twice in consecutive Frauen-Bundesliga games leading up to the Champions League fixture.

Manchester United, making their Champions League debut, had their first two chances through former Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Julia Zigiotti Olme.
