Lamine Yamal Challenges Simeone Ahead of Champions League Clash with Atleti, Believes in Comeback

FC Barcelona faces a daunting task in their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atlético Madrid, aiming for a heroic comeback after suffering a two-goal deficit in the first leg. The Catalan giants will play in a hostile environment at the Metropolitano Stadium. Historically, overturning a 2-0 home defeat in the first leg of the Champions League is a rare feat; Manchester United achieved it against Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 with a 3-1 away win. However, Barcelona narrowly missed a similar accomplishment recently in the Copa del Rey, winning the second leg 3-0 but ultimately losing 4-3 on aggregate. Despite the odds, the team is convinced they can achieve a turnaround this time.

Lamine Yamal, speaking at the pre-match press conference alongside Hansi Flick, directly addressed Atleti manager Diego Simeone, expressing his eagerness for a one-on-one matchup against an opponent: “I feel very good, I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s match. I’m motivated and hope I can make a difference. Let’s see if Cholo does me a favor and puts me one-on-one with one of his players.”

Yamal further elaborated on his belief in a comeback, stating (via RTVE), “I think a comeback is very possible. If we are eliminated, we will have to fight until the end. We won’t let a single minute pass without pushing, without running; we will give everything for this badge.”

Barça manager Hansi Flick adopted a more measured approach, highlighting the tactical differences between the two teams. “We have to attack, press, and take advantage of every opportunity. I think that’s where the difference lies between them and us if we look at the last match, but perhaps tomorrow will be completely different.”

In the first leg, Barcelona played with ten men after Cubarsí’s red card in the 41st minute. Despite the disadvantage and the eventual 2-0 defeat, they managed to outshoot Atleti three-to-one, with 15 shots, and enjoyed greater ball possession.

The match between Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona is scheduled for 9:00 PM CEST (8:00 PM BST), coinciding with Liverpool’s match against PSG, where the Reds also face a two-goal deficit.
