Mass Effect TV Series Writer Denies Rumors of Rewrites for Non-Gamers

With the recent surge in video game adaptations, it’s understandable that many aim to go beyond just satisfying existing fanbases. Streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and HBO Max are eager to broaden their viewership with new series. However, players are equally concerned about being alienated. This is why the news that the Mass Effect series was reportedly being rewritten to cater to a non-gaming audience came as a shock to many.

This news also surprised Daniel Casey, a writer working on the show. While confidentiality agreements prevent him from fully elaborating, he took to Bluesky (as pointed out by PC Gamer) to reveal that he hadn’t heard anything about rewrites targeting a non-gamer audience.

“I can’t talk about the specifics of what I’m writing (I’ve signed NDAs, etc) – but for what it’s worth, this Ankler article caught me as off guard as it did you. I don’t know where this ‘non-gamer audience’ quote came from or who said it, but at no point was that something that was communicated to me,” he wrote.

The Mass Effect television series has been confirmed for some time. Given BioWare’s current trajectory, a significant part of this once-celebrated franchise’s future may rest on the shoulders of the series. If it achieves a level of success comparable to Fallout, it’s likely that fans will clamor for more Mass Effect content. Conversely, if it fails to garner success, Mass Effect might soon follow the path of Dragon Age.
