Among them is winger Oliver Bjorkstrand, signed to a one-year contract. The team expects a significant improvement from Bjorkstrand after a subpar 2025-26 campaign with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Bjorkstrand's Career Path
Selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft, Bjorkstrand debuted in 2015-16. For his first seven seasons, he was a steady defensive presence, contributing around 40 points annually. His most productive year with Columbus was 2021-22, tallying 28 goals and 29 assists in 80 games.
He then moved to the Seattle Kraken, becoming a top forward and helping them reach the postseason in 2022-23. That year, he recorded 20 goals and 25 assists in 82 games, adding four goals and four assists in 14 playoff contests, notably contributing to their upset of the Colorado Avalanche.
Despite the Kraken missing the playoffs in 2023-24, Bjorkstrand set a career-high in points with 59 (20 goals, 39 assists) over 82 games. During the 2024-25 season, a trade sent him to the Lightning, where he finished with 21 goals and 25 assists in 79 games but ended his season injured before the playoffs.
Last season, Bjorkstrand primarily occupied a third-line role with the Lightning, while also featuring on their top power play. Despite a quick wrist shot effective on the power play, his even-strength offense diminished. He finished with 12 goals and 20 assists in 80 games, with only three goals and 15 assists at even strength. He went scoreless in four playoff games.
His Role This Season
Bjorkstrand's one-year, $4.5 million deal represents a low-risk, potentially high-reward investment for the Rangers. Even after a difficult last season, he can still contribute defensively and potentially recapture his offensive form.
The Rangers are likely to maintain their top line of Mika Zibanejad, Alexis Lafreniere, and Gabe Perreault due to their strong performance late last season. Bjorkstrand has an opportunity to secure a spot on the second line, potentially alongside veteran J.T. Miller and Pavel Dorofeyev, who scored 37 goals for the Vegas Golden Knights last season. Playing in a top-six role with skilled linemates should provide more scoring opportunities than his previous third-line assignment.
