Panaracer GravelKing ZX: The Ultimate All-Terrain Gravel Tire?

Panaracer has launched its latest GravelKing tire, the ZX, aiming to be the ultimate all-in-one solution for mixed terrain. This new tire is engineered to eliminate the need for switching tires between different gravel courses by cleverly combining a smooth center tread with aggressive side lugs. This design targets a 60/40 split, offering excellent speed on tarmac and smoother gravel, while providing robust control on technical terrain. During testing, the 45mm variant proved remarkably easy to fit, performed faster than anticipated, and delivered exceptional confidence during cornering and descents, thanks to a fast-rolling shoulder tread that grips effectively without adding noticeable drag. Priced at US$64.99 / £54.99 / €59.99, these tires represent great value for money.

Technical Specifications

  • Model: Panaracer GravelKing ZX
  • Available widths: 700c, ranging from 35mm to 55mm
  • Casing: TuffTex (standard high-performance armored construction), 120tpi
  • Compound: Proprietary ZSG (Zero Slip Grip) Gravel
  • Bead Technology: BeadLock (hookless compatible)
  • Tread Design: Three-Zone architecture

Decoding the Technology

The development of the ZX involved an extensive R&D process, including the testing of six different mold iterations to perfect the tread profile, grip, and overall ride feel. Panaracer aimed to achieve an optimal balance between race-ready speed and endurance-level durability.

According to Jeff Zell, Panaracer’s Global Go to Guy, “We’re excited to introduce the GRAVELKING ZX as the next evolution in our GRAVELKING range. Designed for today’s mixed-surface riding, it delivers race-ready speed alongside the grip and durability riders need when conditions become unpredictable.”

Key Technologies:

  • TuffTex Casing: This construction is designed to protect against sharp gravel impacts while maintaining a supple ride. The 120tpi carcass ensures the protective casing remains flexible.
  • BeadLock Technology: This redesigned bead shape is engineered to securely lock into modern tubeless and hookless rims, simplifying installation and ensuring bead stability even at lower pressures.
  • ZSG (Zero Slip Grip) Gravel Compound: The ZX utilizes a single compound formulation, ensuring consistent grip and durability over time. This compound is specifically formulated for gravel surfaces, providing tackiness in various conditions without compromising rolling efficiency.
  • Three-Zone Architecture: This is the defining feature of the ZX tread:

    • Zone 1 (Center): A smooth strip that minimizes rolling resistance on hard surfaces.
    • Zone 2 (Inner Edge): A transitional tread that engages during braking and leaning, providing a predictable feel.
    • Zone 3 (Outer Edge): Aggressive side lugs that offer mechanical traction for loose corners and technical descents.

On-Course Performance Impressions

Test Setup

The tested tires were the 700c x 45mm ZX standard in black. Measured width on 24mm internal rims was 44.98mm, and the weight was 557g per tire, which is within the expected range for a high-performance tubeless tire.

Installation was notably easy. The tires mounted quickly onto DT Swiss GRC1400 rims using a tire jack and lever, with the beads seating securely around 50 psi using a floor pump. Seating with an air compressor was even faster, confirming that the previous difficulties with GravelKing installations appear to be resolved.

After sealant was added, optimal tire pressure for the reviewer settled at 32 psi front and 34 psi rear on the 44.98mm wide tires. This pressure provided a good balance of support and comfort.

Ride Quality and Stability

The ride feel was smooth, even over rough gravel. The tires handled significant impacts and potholes without issues, thanks to the secure BeadLock interface. The ZX remained stable during cornering, tracking precisely where pointed, even under heavy loads. The shoulder blocks, which transition from shorter near the center to taller at the edge, contributed to a smooth roll-over that felt akin to a slick road tire.

The Shoulder Block Performance

The orientation of the chunky shoulder blocks, which may appear counter-intuitive based on the rotation arrow, proved to be the key to the tire’s exceptional mechanical traction. During cornering in loose gravel, the blocks dug in effectively, providing confident grip without any perceived drag or skidding. This allowed for precise and assured directional changes.

On descents, even at speeds of up to 70 km/h on loose gravel, the shoulder blocks maintained traction, contributing significantly to the tire’s ability to track true. The suppleness of the casing, combined with the effectiveness of the side blocks, was crucial for this stability.

As one reviewer noted, “These tires just lock in when you tip them over.”

Acceleration and Climbing

Despite the tire weight, the ZX did not feel sluggish during accelerations or climbs. The efficient center tread seemed to mitigate any potential weight penalty.

Pricing and Availability

The GravelKing ZX is available now in select models and widths, with the full range rolling out through spring and summer. Prices vary depending on the specific model (Standard, ZX+, ZX R) and width.

The Verdict

The Panaracer GravelKing ZX stands out as a confidence-inspiring, do-it-all gravel tire. It expertly bridges the gap between road slicks and dedicated off-road tires, offering stable cornering on unpredictable surfaces while maintaining speed on pavement and smooth gravel. Its hassle-free setup, secure ride feel, and ability to encourage aggressive riding without compromise make it an ideal choice for the varied demands of modern gravel cycling. It is a strong contender for the title of “the only gravel tire you’ll need.”
