RefCam: Referee’s Live Perspective to Debut in Spain During Copa del Rey Final

The RefCam, a body-worn camera system designed to provide a live, real-time view from the referee’s perspective, is set to make its inaugural appearance in Spain. This innovative technology aims to enhance the viewing experience for football fans by offering an unprecedented close-up of the action and increasing transparency in officiating decisions.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation and LaLiga have confirmed that the RefCam will be implemented for the first time this week. The historic debut will take place during the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, April 18th, at 9:00 PM CEST (8:00 PM BST), featuring a match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad. Referee Javier Alberola will be equipped with the camera, which will also include an integrated microphone.

Broadcasters will be responsible for integrating the RefCam footage with traditional camera feeds, promising spectacular visuals and a deeper understanding of the referee’s calls. Following its introduction in the Copa del Rey final, the RefCam will be deployed in several other upcoming matches, including Barcelona vs. Celta on April 22nd, Betis vs. Real Madrid on April 24th, Valencia vs. Atlético de Madrid, and the highly anticipated El Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid on May 10th.
