Islam Makhachev Confirms He Will Continue Fighting, Dismisses Retirement Talk Ahead of UFC 330

Islam Makhachev, the current UFC lightweight champion, has stated that he has no intention of retiring from professional mixed martial arts after his upcoming fight at UFC 330.

Many observers believe Makhachev has already achieved significant milestones, having secured UFC gold in two different weight divisions and remaining undefeated since 2015. He has largely dominated his opponents, even delivering a decisive knockout victory in a rematch against fellow future UFC Hall of Famer Alexander Volkanovski.

With his focus now on his first welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330, there has been considerable discussion about how much longer Makhachev will remain an active competitor. Noted UFC commentator Joe Rogan had previously suggested that the welterweight king might consider retiring if he defeats Garry.

However, fans of Makhachev can rest assured. The pound-for-pound elite fighter recently informed TMZ Sports that he is not planning to step away from the sport anytime soon. As quoted by Bloody Elbow, Makhachev stated, "No, no, no. I told you I like to be UFC champion and we’re still going."

He further elaborated, "It’s not about numbers, about age. It’s about your health, how you feel. Not everybody can feel the same at 34. That’s why I feel great. No injuries. I still enjoy the sports, you know. That’s why we will fight again. You will see me many more times."

Makhachev is often compared to MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, as they are childhood friends and long-time training partners. Nurmagomedov retired with an undefeated record of 29-0, and many felt he could have continued fighting. It appears Makhachev is charting a different course, aiming to continue competing for as long as his physical condition allows.
