Khabib Nurmagomedov Criticizes Islam Makhachev's Reaction to Ian Machado Garry's Compliment
UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov has voiced his dissatisfaction with Islam Makhachev's conduct at the UFC 330 pre-fight press conference. The incident occurred when top contender Ian Machado Garry offered a compliment to Makhachev.
During the press conference, as UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev was discussing the influence of his late coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Ian Machado Garry interjected with a positive statement. Garry expressed that the late coach would have been proud of Makhachev ahead of their UFC 330 bout.
Makhachev's response to Garry's praise was a blunt "Shut up," creating a tense moment during the event. However, Khabib Nurmagomedov, a longtime mentor and close associate of Makhachev, did not endorse his protégé's reaction.
Nurmagomedov Addresses Makhachev's Behavior
In a recent appearance on "Anatomy of a Fighter," Nurmagomedov shared his thoughts on Makhachev's unexpected retort to Garry's compliment.
"I told these guys – I paid for their English classes for one year! They learned nothing," Nurmagomedov remarked about Makhachev's communication skills.
He continued, emphasizing the importance of civility: "Ian Garry, who was talking very nicely about him, and [Islam] says ‘Shut up’. Be nice, brother. Sometimes, when you don’t like somebody, and they give you respect, at least be quiet. Don’t say, ‘Shut up.'"
Despite Nurmagomedov's critique, Makhachev appeared unfazed as he concluded his final preparations for UFC 330. A victory in his upcoming fight would set a new UFC record for the longest winning streak, surpassing Anderson Silva.
It's worth noting that Garry has drawn criticism from other fighters regarding his recent interviews, including UFC welterweight Uros Medic, who took issue with Garry's stance on universal female leadership.
