Celebrations in Mexico following their 3-0 victory against Czechia, which secured their group’s top spot in the World Cup, took a tragic turn in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California. A hit-and-run incident on Wednesday evening left 17 people injured, with one individual reported to be in critical condition.
A black car sped into a street packed with jubilant fans celebrating the win. The vehicle accelerated into the crowd, striking several people before crashing into bollards.
Social media footage depicts individuals forcefully shaking the car as it entered the crowded street. Subsequently, the vehicle accelerated, hitting dozens of people, a scenario that appears to be a recurring danger when vehicles attempt to navigate through such dense gatherings.
The driver was apprehended at the scene and, due to their injuries, was transported to the hospital under escort. Authorities will determine the driver’s legal status once their medical condition permits, as reported by Milenio.
The motive behind the driver’s actions of accelerating and hitting the crowd remains unclear. This incident draws a parallel to a similar event in 2025 during Liverpool’s championship celebrations, where a man intentionally drove into a crowd for two minutes, injuring 130 people, reportedly after he “lost his cool” when surrounded by onlookers.
