Malissa Sherwood, a Trailblazing Wrestler and MMA Fighter, Passes Away

Malissa Sherwood, a groundbreaking figure in women’s mixed martial arts, has died at the age of 50 following a fight with cancer. The news of the former professional MMA competitor’s death began circulating on social media this week.

“The wrestling community has lost one of its pioneers in women’s wrestling,” wrote Afsoon Roshan Johnston on Facebook. “Malissa Sherwood was a fierce competitor and paved the way for many young women in the sport. We will honor her, and she will be inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame on May 2. Rest in peace, Malissa.”

Tonya Evinger, a former Invicta FC champion and UFC competitor, also shared a message about the passing of her friend.

“Today is a sad day. Rest easy, Malissa Sherwood. I hope your journey was a great one. I will always love you.”

Malissa Sherwood had a professional MMA record of 3 wins and 2 losses, competing between 2006 and 2010. She was an alumna of Missouri Valley College and Sierra College.

Sherwood’s wrestling career began earlier, from 1995 to 2004, during which she was a member of the US National Team, World Team, and Olympic Development Team. Her impressive wrestling accolades include being an 8-time Senior US National Runner-Up, an 8-time Senior World Team Runner-Up, a Pan American Champion in 1999, and a multiple-time University Champion and NAIA Champion.

She was also the first female to receive a full scholarship to Missouri Valley College and was associated with the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.
