The second line is also strong, with Easton Cowan, John Tavares, and William Nylander offering a blend of skill, experience, and offensive creativity. While Tavares may have lost a step, he remains a vital player capable of carrying the scoring load when Matthews is unavailable.

Is the Maple Leafs' Depth Sufficient?

There's been much discussion about the Maple Leafs improving their depth, but can it extend beyond the top six? Players like Nick Paul, Colton Sissons, Jack Roslovic, Teddy Blueger, and Brandon Duhaime are respectable NHLers. The key question is whether they elevate the team or merely change the makeup of the bottom six. The Maple Leafs' Goaltending: A Major Unknown

Sergei Bobrovsky brings a proven playoff track record, while Anthony Stolarz has demonstrated his ability to be an excellent goaltender when healthy. Toronto doesn't necessarily need Bobrovsky to recapture his past glory; they need both goalies to form a reliable 1A/1B tandem.

This is a considerable challenge. Bobrovsky will turn 38 before the 2026-27 season, and Stolarz has a history of injury issues. The primary task isn't determining who is the better goalie, but rather if they can both stay healthy, perform adequately, and provide Jim Hiller with the consistent goaltending a team needs over an 82-game season.

If Bobrovsky can deliver stretches of his championship-caliber play and Stolarz offers the athleticism and reliability he's shown when healthy, the Leafs could have a strong tandem. However, there is little room for either goalie to falter significantly or face extended time on the injured list.

What Lies Ahead for the Maple Leafs?

The intriguing aspect of this Maple Leafs team is the potential for considerable improvement without necessarily appearing stronger on paper. McKenna could elevate the top line, Cowan might take a significant leap, and the defense could prove deeper than anticipated. If Bobrovsky and Stolarz remain healthy, the goaltending situation could stabilize.

However, the most substantial change could come from behind the bench. If Hiller can improve Toronto's possession game while still allowing forwards like Matthews and Nylander to create offense, the Leafs could look vastly different from last season's team.

This is the gamble Toronto is taking. After winning the lottery and acquiring McKenna, there is little time left for another rebuilding phase. The Maple Leafs must now demonstrate the results of all these changes.
