Robelis Despaigne secured a split decision victory over Tai Tuivasa at UFC 331. Despaigne, returning after a May knockout win over Junior dos Santos, faced Tuivasa, who was looking to end a seven-fight losing streak.
The first round saw an early exchange, with Despaigne landing counters and Tuivasa responding with power shots. Despaigne secured a takedown, moving to half guard and then full mount, landing strikes as Tuivasa’s corner expressed concern. Tuivasa attempted a comeback, landing an elbow and securing his own takedown, finishing the round with an arm-triangle choke attempt that Despaigne survived.
In the second round, Tuivasa landed a significant shot, putting Despaigne in a precarious position against the cage. Despaigne defended a takedown attempt, and after a brief striking exchange, Despaigne executed a sweep, landing in side-control. He maintained top position for much of the remainder of the round, though offense was limited. The fighters were stood up late in the round, leading to a brief clinch before the bell.
The final round began with Tuivasa landing a low kick that dropped Despaigne to a knee. Tuivasa clinched and pushed Despaigne against the fence, landing body shots and a right hand. Despaigne countered with a left. After another clinch, Despaigne scored a hip toss, gaining top position in half guard. He landed short punches before Tuivasa returned to his feet with seconds remaining, throwing missed strikes.
The official results declared Robelis Despaigne the winner by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
