Aaron McKenna Eyes Dominance After Fierce Face-Off with Oliha

Despite his imposing stature, which he believes could one day see him compete at heavyweight, Aaron McKenna successfully made the middleweight limit on Friday.

McKenna is set to face Etinosa Oliha for the IBF championship on Saturday, live on Sky Sports at the 3Arena in Dublin. Both fighters successfully weighed in below the middleweight limit, with McKenna at 159.6lbs and Oliha at 159.1lbs.

McKenna demonstrated his world-class potential with a significant victory over former WBO 154lbs champion Liam Smith last year. He aims to reaffirm his quality against Oliha and become Ireland's first middleweight world champion since Andy Lee.

"My last fight [against Smith] definitely opened a lot of eyes due to the dominant fashion in which I won," McKenna told Sky Sports. "To fight a former world champion like Liam Smith was a huge name to add to my record. Many people predicted I would lose, so that was another bonus. The way I beat him really opened eyes and got my name out there.

“Going into that fight, I was the underdog, and not many people gave me a chance. But I knew it was my time to truly show the world what a good boxer I am. Many didn't expect me to have that style, but I've been saying for years how good of a boxer I am.

"Now is another opportunity to truly shine again."

McKenna is resolute in his ambition to build upon his success. "Once I become a world champion, I'm going to take over the division," he stated. "I want to unify the division. The 160lbs division is ripe for consolidation. My goal is to become undisputed and then a multiple-weight world champion.

"I want the biggest and best fights. I aim to face undefeated fighters or current world champions to prove I'm the best in the world. If I can't secure fights with the champions at 160lbs, I'll move up to 168lbs; it makes no difference to me. First, I will take care of business on Saturday."

On the undercard, Callum Walsh will compete against Tyler Denny in a challenging bout. Walsh, who has predominantly fought at super-welterweight, met the 160lbs limit precisely, while Denny weighed in at 159.7lbs.

Light-heavyweight prospect Joe Ward is looking to make his mark in professional boxing against the hard-hitting, undefeated contender Artjom Kasparian. Both fighters successfully made weight, with Ward at 174.08lbs and Kasparian at 174.2lbs.

"It's going to be incredible," Walsh told Sky Sports. "It's going to be a fantastic card from start to finish. The atmosphere will be electric. Quick fights, good fights back-to-back, maintaining the buzz, and by the time I enter the ring, the energy will be unbelievable.

"We can continue to demonstrate that Ireland produces some of the finest fighters globally."

'Reality is better than any script you could write'

McKenna engaged in a tense final face-off with Oliha at the ceremonial weigh-in at the 3Arena on Friday night.

The bout between McKenna and Oliha represents the type of world title fight Zuffa Boxing's Dana White aspires to host.

"Unbeaten records on the line, fights that genuinely matter. Once a fighter reaches the top five, and you look at the caliber of opponents they've faced and the gauntlet they've overcome against the toughest guys in the division, and then they become a world champion, they are truly the world champion," White told Sky Sports. "You know who the champ is because you've seen them fight everyone on their way up, and that's what fight fans want to witness."

White suggested that Aaron McKenna and Callum Walsh could potentially face each other in the future, provided they both secure victories on Saturday.

"Anything is possible. I never make predictions before a fight because you never know how it will unfold," White commented. "Reality is superior to any script you could write. You let reality play out.

"You have to let these events unfold naturally, and that's how stars are built."

The remaining undercard fighters also comfortably made weight. Top Scottish prospect Sam Hickey, in a contracted bout at 162lbs against Brad Axe, weighed in at 161.3lbs, as did his opponent. Louis Greene tipped the scales at 159.4lbs, and Daniel Bucuic at 158.4lbs for their middleweight encounter.

The undercard stream is scheduled to commence at 5 pm on Saturday. Patrick O'Connor (200.5lbs), a formidable American cruiserweight prospect with Irish heritage, will open the event against Spain's Juan Manuel Moriel (191lbs 2oz).

Derry's Connor Coyle (158.8lbs) aims to position himself among the top middleweights in his bout against American Mark Beuke (159.6lbs).

Stevie McKenna (159.7lbs) will be in action prior to his brother's world title fight. He faces former sparring partner Owen O'Neill (158.5lbs).

All fighters experienced the atmosphere of the 3Arena at the ceremonial weigh-in on Friday, which served as a prelude to Saturday's main event.

"It's going to be electric on Saturday night," White stated. "The matchmaking is incredible, and on paper, you know how a fight looks, feels, and should play out. Hopefully, that's the case when they step into the ring. That's what we have in store for Saturday night."
