Demetrious Johnson Inducted into UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2026

Las Vegas – UFC has officially announced that Demetrious Johnson, the former UFC flyweight champion, will be enshrined in the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame as a distinguished member of the Class of 2026. The prestigious induction ceremony is scheduled to take place this summer.

UFC President and CEO Dana White lauded Johnson, stating, “Demetrious Johnson stands as the greatest flyweight of all time.” White further emphasized Johnson's exceptional career in Mixed Martial Arts, highlighting his remarkable achievement of 11 consecutive title defenses as one of the most extraordinary records ever witnessed in professional sports. White expressed his honor in welcoming Johnson into the UFC Hall of Fame later this year.

Johnson will become the 18th inductee into the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. This category is reserved for athletes who began their professional careers on or after November 17, 2000, coinciding with the first UFC event held under the unified rules of MMA. Additional criteria include being at least 35 years old or having been retired from active competition for a minimum of one year.

Throughout his extensive 14-year MMA career, Demetrious Johnson participated in 30 professional bouts, accumulating an impressive record of 25 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw (with a 17-3, 1 draw record specifically within UFC/WEC). His notable victories include wins over former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, ex-RIZIN flyweight champion Kyoji Horiguchi, former two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo, and former Pancrase flyweight tournament winner Yuya Wakamatsu.

After achieving nine consecutive victories in amateur MMA promotions, Johnson made his professional debut on August 15, 2009, securing his first win via submission at King of the Cage: Thunderstruck. He then competed in the Alaska Fighting Championship, winning two fights, before transitioning to WEC.

Johnson's WEC debut occurred on the preliminary card of WEC 48: ALDO vs. FABER on April 24, 2010, in Sacramento, California. Despite an initial decision loss to Brad Pickett, he swiftly rebounded with four consecutive victories across WEC and UFC, earning him his inaugural title shot against the then-champion, Dominick Cruz.

On October 1, 2011, Johnson challenged Cruz in the main event of UFC LIVE: CRUZ vs. JOHNSON in Washington, D.C. Cruz successfully retained his championship by defeating Johnson via unanimous decision.

Following a draw against Ian McCall in his subsequent fight, Johnson decisively won their rematch via unanimous decision. This victory propelled him to the UFC flyweight tournament finale at UFC 152, where he was set to face Joseph Benavidez.

UFC 152: JONES vs. BELFORT, held on September 22, 2012, in Toronto, Ontario, featured Johnson versus Benavidez in the co-main event. Johnson emerged victorious via a split decision, thereby becoming the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.

As the reigning UFC flyweight champion, Johnson embarked on a historic journey, achieving an unprecedented 11 consecutive title defenses and victories over four years. This remarkable feat firmly cemented his legacy as one of the greatest mixed martial arts athletes of all time.

On August 4, 2018, Johnson experienced his first defeat in five years, losing to Henry Cejudo via split decision in the co-main event of UFC 227: DILLASHAW vs. GARBRANDT 2.

Subsequent to this loss, Johnson departed from the UFC and signed with ONE Championship, a prominent MMA promotion based in Singapore. There, he secured five wins in six fights, capturing the flyweight world grand prix title and becoming the organization’s flyweight champion, which he successfully defended once. He announced his retirement on May 5, 2023, vacating his title after his final successful defense.

Throughout his illustrious career, Demetrious Johnson has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including "Fighter of the Year" by FOX Sports in 2013, and by ESPN and Sports Illustrated in 2017. In 2017, he also earned "Submission of the Year" honors from the Fighters Only World MMA Awards, ESPN, and MMA Fighting.

A native of Parkland, Washington, Demetrious Johnson was a standout wrestler at Washington High School, achieving second and third place finishes at the state level during his junior and senior years. After high school, he pursued MMA as a hobby before competing as an amateur on the regional circuit in Washington. Johnson is also a passionate gamer and an accomplished jiu-jitsu practitioner, having competed in the IBJJF Master World and Pan Championships. He currently resides in Washington with his wife and children.
