Sony's Refusal of Physint: The Reasons Behind It
Hideo Kojima's name has long been associated with PlayStation, starting with the iconic Metal Gear Solid. This long-standing partnership continued even after Kojima left Konami to establish his own studio. Therefore, Sony's decision to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions and forgo publishing Physint caused significant stir.
Sony's Rationale
A Bloomberg report details the factors that led Sony to this decision. Apparently, the Japanese company was dissatisfied with the sales performance of the two Death Stranding titles, both of which fell short of expectations. Further contributing to this were various concerns surrounding the Physint project itself.
According to the report, Kojima Productions had already missed deadlines. While we know the studio faced casting challenges, full production only commenced after Death Stranding 2's release, meaning it was less than a year into development when Sony made its choice. Budget was another significant factor, with projections indicating a potential overspend.
Consequently, Sony opted to withdraw rather than invest hundreds of millions into a project where exclusivity could not be guaranteed. Death Stranding's eventual release on Xbox and PC, due to Kojima retaining intellectual property rights, serves as a prime example. This raises questions about Physint's potential multiplatform future.
