PlayStation Disc Phase-Out vs. Steam's Digital Preference

July 10, 2026Carlos Mendoza1 мин

PlayStation's recent announcement that it will cease producing games on disc from January 2028, excluding titles released before that date, signals a potential end to physical media for consoles, with Nintendo being a notable exception. This shift is a reality PC gamers have long since adapted to, with many on Steam indicating they would not even consider purchasing games on disc if they were still offered.

According to TheGamer, a Reddit user named Thund3rWolf27 initiated a discussion about the return of PC game discs. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of digital-only libraries, with most Steam users stating a strong preference against the return of physical media. The prevailing sentiment is that an exclusively digital library is far more convenient for contemporary PC gamers. Furthermore, PC offers more options for preserving games beyond the platform itself, unlike consoles.

Steam's support for DRM-free games means that players may not even require Steam to launch their games, as simply accessing the executable file is often sufficient. Additionally, even for digitally purchased PC games, there are other methods for physical archiving, a possibility not typically available on consoles.

Sony's move away from discs will undoubtedly require an adjustment period for many users. To facilitate a smoother transition, PlayStation may need to incorporate features similar to those offered by Steam. Moreover, if Sony aims for a fully digital model, PlayStation Store sales will need to closely resemble Steam's seasonal offerings.
