EU Mandates Greater Transparency in Airline Ticket Pricing, Angering Ryanair

July 10, 2026Diego Herrera1 мин

The European Parliament is moving forward with new regulations designed to make it more challenging for budget airlines to offer tickets that exclude standard carry-on baggage. While these fare options will still exist, Euronews reports that the default displayed option must be a ticket that includes a piece of carry-on luggage. Passengers will then have the flexibility to remove the baggage if it's not needed to secure a lower price, or to add extra services if they are willing to pay more.

Furthermore, the updated rules establish that all passengers will be permitted to bring a free carry-on bag measuring 40x30x15 centimeters. Additionally, passengers are entitled to compensation ranging from €300 to €600 for delays of at least three hours. The cost of correcting a spelling error on a ticket name will also be eliminated.

Additional provisions include requirements that children must be seated with a guardian. Airlines will also be prevented from cancelling return flights if the outbound journey is missed. Previously, missing the initial flight often resulted in the forfeiture of the return booking, even if the passenger intended to travel later.

However, Travel Weekly notes that not everyone is pleased with these changes, with Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary publicly voicing his strong objections.
