Thousands evacuated in Southern France due to massive wildfire
Southern France is grappling with a significant wildfire that has necessitated the evacuation of over 10,000 individuals. The blaze has also resulted in 16 injuries and has consumed an estimated 4,600 hectares of land. The fire started near Perpignan, close to the Spanish border.
This latest emergency is unfolding amidst a severe European heatwave, which has intensified fire risks across the region. Authorities have cautioned that strong winds are fanning the flames, while prolonged heat has dried out large areas in Western and Southern Europe, making them highly susceptible to wildfires.
The situation has cross-border implications, affecting both sides of the French-Spanish border and even impacting the ongoing Tour de France. The European Union is dispatching aerial support and ground crews to assist. Neighboring Spain and Portugal are also battling severe wildfires, a consequence of the relentless heatwave.
