Ben Danford's NHL Debut with Maple Leafs Expected in 2026-27

The Toronto Maple Leafs face a crowded blue line heading into the 2026-27 season. This presents a challenge for defensive prospect Ben Danford, who aims to establish himself within the organization this year.

Danford, 20, transitioned to the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies last season, contributing to their Calder Cup victory. This season, he seeks further development and a potential NHL call-up.

However, with players like Emil Andrae and Troy Stetcher vying for the sixth defenseman spot, and Nick Blankenburg joining on a professional try-out, Danford's chances of starting the season with the main club appear slim for now. Still, his promotion could be imminent, according to former Maple Leafs assistant coach and Marlies head coach Steve Sullivan.

Sullivan Recognizes Danford's Potential

After joining the Marlies last season, Danford played 16 playoff games against strong competition, stepping up from his OHL opposition.

He showed offensive promise with three points and asserted his physical presence during the Calder Cup run. Though it was a brief 16-game stint, Danford gained valuable experience with the Marlies, a point highlighted by the Marlies' new coach.

“He’s had those deep (AHL) reps he needed against really big guys. He doesn’t need much, it’s whether there’s room and can he be better than the sixth (D) on the Leafs,” Sullivan stated.

As previously mentioned, the Maple Leafs' defense is currently full. Danford's immediate future hinges on his ability to impress the coaching staff. However, the depth on defense likely presents a hurdle too significant to overcome for a starting role at this moment.

Danford's NHL Debut Still Likely in 2026-27

While the team has an abundance of defensemen, a strong backend is always crucial, especially for playoff contention. As demonstrated last season, injuries are inevitable, requiring teams to have capable replacements.

Although his NHL transition remains uncertain, Danford has largely secured his place within the Maple Leafs' defensive depth for injury call-ups. This suggests he will likely see NHL action at some point during the 2026-27 season.

Beyond Andrae and Stetcher competing for the sixth spot, Blankenburg will also make his presence felt in training camp. Following them, William Villeneuve and Danford will be top candidates for the first call-ups of the season.

Ultimately, their performance to start the season in the AHL will be key. Villeneuve, 24, brings more experience and is coming off a 30-point campaign with the Marlies. The coaching staff from both the Marlies and Maple Leafs will closely monitor the young prospect, Danford.
