AI Music Generator Loses Copyright Lawsuit Over Use of Human Art
Suno, a company focused on AI-powered music creation, has recently faced a setback in a copyright infringement lawsuit in Germany. The Regional Court of Munich ruled in favor of GEMA, the German performance rights organization, concluding that Suno was never authorized to use music represented by GEMA to train its generative AI model.
In line with recent similar cases, the judgment clarifies that training an AI can indeed constitute copyright infringement. According to the details of the case, the court determined that Suno had used, stored, and reproduced copyrighted music without a license, thereby violating both German and US copyright laws.
This verdict could escalate the pressure on AI music companies to secure licenses for their training data, a demand echoed by other organizations. Suno now faces the prospect of paying damages, the exact amount of which is yet to be determined. This decision strengthens GEMA's argument that AI companies must obtain licenses for musical catalogs before utilizing them for any commercial purposes. Beyond industry associations representing musicians, Suno is also involved in other legal actions brought forth by major record labels, including Universal and Sony.
