Magic: The Gathering - The Hobbit: A Powerful Addition for Victory
Magic: The Gathering consistently excels with its impeccable timing for new set releases. Just recently, they launched the Marvel: Super Heroes set, perfectly coinciding with the peak popularity of the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. We provided a detailed look at this expansion and even opened some boosters to enhance our new Avengers Commander deck.
However, the current release, Magic: The Gathering - The Hobbit, offers a different experience, extending far beyond its cinematic adaptation. This new expansion is now available, and Wizards of the Coast kindly sent us some products to give you an in-depth preview of what to expect from this latest venture into Tolkien's Middle-earth.
The timing for a Middle-earth-themed release couldn't be better. Beloved video games are receiving remasters, exciting new projects are on the horizon, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring. His film trilogy, along with The Two Towers and The Return of the King, introduced epic fantasy to a global audience. Following this, Jackson's The Hobbit films brought back beloved cast members from The Lord of the Rings, reprising key narrative roles in this prequel chronicling Bilbo Baggins' journey to the Lonely Mountain alongside Gandalf and the dwarves.
The Hobbit expansion offers fantastic cards to enhance your Commander decks. Primarily, Magic: The Gathering: The Hobbit aims to achieve two distinct goals: to serve as an introduction to the Magic: The Gathering brand and to act as a collectible, limited edition inspired by Middle-earth. We'll delve into both aspects.
This set is described as an "entry point" due to its more focused scope compared to other "Universes Beyond" sets like the recent Marvel: Super Heroes. There are no pre-constructed Commander decks for competitive play. Instead, starter decks are inspired by the JumpStart format, utilizing 40-card, single-color decks designed to teach Magic's core mechanics. These decks are even being offered for free at in-store launch events for this set, making them an excellent, cost-free way to acquire cards.
Tolkien's works—The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and his broader legendarium—are universally recognized icons. Even those with only a casual interest in fantasy will likely find these cards intriguing. Despite being a relatively "small" expansion with 193 cards (excluding foil and special printings), making it accessible for collectors aiming for completion, it's packed with delightful details for both newcomers and dedicated Magic: The Gathering fans. A particularly charming touch is the starter pack's inclusion of four basic Plains, each depicting a different season at the entrance to Bag End.
For the most avid collectors, the chase is on for the shimmering, golden variant of Smaug the Magnificent. With only 500 copies produced, exclusively found in collector boosters, this card currently commands a secondary market price ranging from €65,000 to half a million euros. Yes, you read that correctly.
A more budget-friendly rarity to hunt for are the cards featuring Dwarven language. This was achieved through collaboration with expert linguists and Tolkien scholars to adapt runic script to Magic: The Gathering ability terminology.
Beyond its collectible appeal and excellent entry point for new players, what does this set offer to regular Magic players? Like all sets, it introduces specific rules that are legal in official tournaments. Notably, this expansion brings three new mechanics. Adventure, a central mechanic in The Hobbit set, allows you to play creatures as instants first, exile them, and then return them from exile as normal creatures.
There's also the "Storied" mechanic, a capacity that can be challenging to trigger but can prove decisive. It requires you to control the permanent whose ability you wish to activate alongside three or more other artifacts, legendary permanents, or Sagas. When this condition is met, the permanent unlocks bonus abilities. Finally, the "Recruit" ability involves discarding a card; if it's not a land card, you can add a 1/1 Soldier token.
While not a primary mechanic, the "The Hobbit" expansion also introduces new "Sharpened" counters for artifacts, which grant +1/+0 to Equipment cards.
In conclusion, the "The Hobbit" expansion was already poised for another resounding success for Wizards of the Coast's trading card game. Its compelling theme, broad appeal beyond just TCG enthusiasts, and highly sought-after limited edition cards make it a must-have. Whether you're a fan of hobbits, Tolkien's work, or The Lord of the Rings in general, you simply cannot afford to miss out. In fact, the biggest challenge right now seems to be acquiring it, as it's flying off the shelves as if it were carrying a certain ring...
