New York School Suspends AI Teacher Robot Project Amid Manufacturer's Sex Robot Ties
A New York school district has halted its plan to acquire and utilize an AI-powered teacher robot following an outcry from parents. The Salamanca City Central School District had intended to introduce "Sally," a $60,000 humanoid robot from the brand Realbotix, as a classroom assistant. However, parents voiced concerns regarding student data and the robot's manufacturer.
Some parents expressed worry about their children interacting with a machine capable of storing personal data. Others opposed the project upon learning that Realbotix had previously manufactured "intimacy dolls" and even "sex robots."
The district, however, clarified that the project is "on hold" and not necessarily canceled. In the meantime, officials state they are working on implementing stricter agreements for student data privacy and are consulting with the community. The superintendent also emphasized that a robot should never replace a human teacher.
