Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Monte-Carlo Masters 2024, First Absence Since 2011
Novak Djokovic's 2024 season reached its pinnacle with his appearance in the Australian Open final. However, since then, the Serbian champion has largely maintained a low profile, likely preserving his energy for the upcoming Grand Slams. The 36-year-old Serbian has confirmed his decision to skip the Monte-Carlo Masters, making this his first absence from the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monaco since 2011.
Djokovic previously missed the ongoing Miami Open and was eliminated in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells, where he lost in three sets, including a decisive tie-break ending 7-5.
The Monte-Carlo Masters, the inaugural clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season, is scheduled to take place between April 5 and 12. Carlos Alcaraz will be defending 1,000 crucial points at the tournament, which could be vital for him to retain his world No. 1 ranking. The 2024 edition of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters will also notably be without Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
Following two consecutive tournament withdrawals, Djokovic's return to competitive play is anticipated at either the Madrid Open or the Rome Masters. These tournaments are considered key preparation events for him ahead of Roland Garros in June.
