Owlcat Studios Embraces New Genres While Staying True to CRPG Roots
Owlcat Studios, known for its expertise in CRPGs, is venturing into new territory with "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn," a third-person RPG inspired by Mass Effect. However, this move doesn't signify a departure from their core genre.
The studio has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from a team of 15 to around 600 employees over the past decade. Despite this rapid expansion, Owlcat remains committed to its CRPG origins.
In a recent interview with PCGamesN, Owlcat co-founder Alexander Mishulin highlighted the learning curve associated with developing "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn." "There are obvious elements like the new engine, cover-shooter gameplay, and entirely different production processes," Mishulin explained. He also noted less apparent challenges, such as the cinematic aspects, which are on a scale the studio hasn't tackled before.
Despite the new gameplay mechanics and scale, Mishulin emphasized that "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn" will still embody the core of an Owlcat RPG. "The focus is on companions, who are more present and integrated into the gameplay than in other games of this genre, and on the narrative, with choices and their consequences," he stated.
Given Owlcat's ongoing work on "Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy," it's clear the studio has no intention of abandoning CRPGs. "We will continue to make CRPGs because we love them. We don't want to stagnate. We will be testing different approaches for our role-playing games, trying to find the one that best suits the game's idea," Mishulin concluded.
"The Expanse: Osiris Reborn" is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
