Peter Jackson and Stephen Colbert Team Up for New Lord of the Rings Film
Even over two decades later, it remains a challenge to find fantasy films that captivate audiences with the same epic scale and immersive storytelling as Peter Jackson's original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Recognizing this enduring appeal, Warner Bros. is inviting fans back to Middle-earth for a fresh adventure rooted in J.R.R. Tolkien's classic literature.
Unveiled in a video commemorating Tolkien Reading Day, The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past is the working title for an upcoming sequel designed to bridge certain narrative gaps and explore untold aspects of Tolkien's initial work. To avoid re-treading or conflicting with the beloved original story, this will be a new sequel, developed by Stephen Colbert, his son Peter McGee, Peter Jackson, and screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who played a key role in the development of both Tolkien trilogies for Warner Bros.
The official logline for the film states: "Fourteen years after Frodo's passing – Sam, Merry, and Pippin embark on a journey to retrace the very first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Elanor, Sam’s daughter, has uncovered a long-buried secret and is determined to discover why the War of the Ring very nearly was lost before it even began."
The narrative will revolve around Colbert's concept of integrating specific sections of The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from the initial book adaptation. Specifically, chapters three and six: "Three is Company" and "Fog on the Barrow-Downs." As two chapters alone are insufficient for a full feature film, it's expected that significant additional story elements will be woven in. While Shadows of the Past currently lacks a release date, it is slated to arrive after The Hunt for Gollum, which is anticipated to premiere in 2027.
