Sevilla Sacks Matías Almeyda Amid LaLiga Relegation Fears
FC Sevilla announced on Monday the dismissal of its 52-year-old head coach, Matías Almeyda. The Argentinian, who previously managed AEK Athens, the San Jose Earthquakes in MLS, and Guadalajara in Mexico, and also played as a midfielder for Sevilla (1996/97), failed to steer the club away from the relegation zone. With only 31 points, Sevilla is currently just three points and two places above the drop line.
In an official statement, the club expressed its "gratitude to Matías Almeyda and his team for their work during these months" and wished them "good luck in their future professional endeavors."
Almeyda had taken the helm in June 2025, signing a three-year contract set to run until 2028.
Across 32 matches, his tenure saw 10 wins, 7 draws, and 15 losses, despite a notable 4-1 victory against Barcelona. The team's performance declined, a situation exacerbated by Almeyda's own five-match suspension last month for a confrontation with the referee during a game against Alavés.
Sevilla currently holds the unwelcome distinction of having conceded the most goals in LaLiga, with a total of 49. Amassing 31 points after 29 matchdays marks the club's second-worst record this century, only slightly better than the 2023/24 season (28 points). These figures are deemed unacceptable for a club that boasts a record seven UEFA Europa League titles, the most recent secured in 2022/23.
