Six Arab Nations Back Gianni Infantino, Including AFC Members Qatar and Lebanon
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has secured the backing of six Arab countries, who issued a joint statement on Thursday expressing their appreciation for the Swiss football official. This support comes at a time when a significant portion of the football world has voiced opposition, with UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC releasing a strong statement earlier in the week, and UEFA even maintaining the threat of boycotting the World Cup.
"Recognizing the important role of Arab football in bringing people together and strengthening cooperation among football federations across the Arab world, we express our full support for Mr. Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, and reaffirm our confidence in his leadership and continued commitment to the development of football worldwide," reads a joint communiqué signed by the leaders of the football federations of Qatar, Lebanon (AFC members), Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, and Mauritania (CAF members), as reported by Reuters.
This indicates that at least Qatar and Lebanon will vote differently from the majority of AFC members who have joined UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing Infantino. He requires a simple majority of 106 votes to be re-elected as FIFA President at the upcoming FIFA Council in 2027.
Combined, UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC represent 136 of the 211 member federations. However, each country has only one vote and is free to vote as they choose. Consequently, despite rising pressure, Infantino may find enough allies to be re-elected next year, even though some countries, particularly in Europe, have already confirmed they will vote against him.
