Spanish Airport Returns to Aircraft Storage Hub Amid Iran Conflict
Teruel Airport, a secluded facility in Spain, has once again become a temporary hub for aircraft storage. This surge in demand is driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran, which is severely disrupting global aviation and compelling airlines to either divert flights or ground their fleets.
Known as one of Europe's largest aircraft storage and maintenance facilities, the airport anticipates the arrival of around twenty additional planes, including several from Qatar Airways. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Teruel accommodated up to 140 grounded aircraft over a two-year period.
Its unique dry, salt-free climate makes it an ideal location for preserving aircraft. Airlines are once again utilizing Teruel as a safe haven, facing complications from airspace closures and fuel supply issues that disrupt normal operations.
Airport director Alejandro Ibrahim states that airlines are "revising their fleets and routes" while actively seeking secure locations across Europe. On some days, the facility witnesses the arrival of up to ten wide-body aircraft, among the largest commercial jets.
Unlike conventional airports, Teruel does not handle passenger traffic, which allows aircraft to remain parked on its tarmac for extended durations. The facility boasts a significant capacity, capable of accommodating up to 250 wide-body and 400 narrow-body planes.
Operators acknowledge that planning remains highly uncertain, with decisions made on a week-by-week basis, contingent on the evolving conflict. While the current demand for storage generates activity, the airport's core business remains maintenance, which ultimately relies on aircraft returning to active service.
