UEFA Maintains World Cup Boycott as FIFA Fails to Meet Conditions, Intensifies Pressure on Infantino
The UEFA is intensifying its pressure on FIFA and Gianni Infantino, with its boycott of the World Cup remaining in effect, as outlined in a new statement released on Thursday. This stance persists even after FIFA announced it was withdrawing its plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investors.
In its statement, UEFA clarified that withdrawing the sale proposal was only one of several conditions. They also demanded assurances that FIFA would never again attempt to implement such a project. "Firstly, proposals to divest major competitions had to be withdrawn, and secondly, assurances had to be obtained that such attempts to distort football in this manner would never be repeated. These conditions have not been met," the statement read.
"UEFA clearly stated in its statement on Saturday that it had lost confidence in the presidency of Gianni Infantino. This position remains unchanged," UEFA declared, adding that "yesterday's announcement that certain individuals employed by the FIFA president (and whose careers depend on his favor) agree with him changes nothing."
Should UEFA uphold its boycott, no European national team will participate in any FIFA competition, including the men's and women's World Cups. This boycott is expected to continue until Gianni Infantino definitively departs, which could occur during the March 2027 elections if he is defeated by another candidate. Currently, very few individuals appear capable of achieving this outcome.
