UK's Largest Telescope Faces Closure Due to Funding Cuts
The United Kingdom's most significant telescope is under threat of permanent closure following a reduction in its funding. According to Sky News, the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire could soon cease operations permanently as its funding is set to expire in March 2028.
Public support for the telescope is no longer considered a "priority," as stated by UK Research and Innovation, a government-funded body responsible for allocating funds. This decision has sparked considerable controversy, particularly among prominent figures in British science.
The Lovell Telescope, a steerable radio telescope with a 76.2-meter dish, is the third largest of its kind globally. Inaugurated in 1957, it played a crucial role in tracking American and Soviet space probes during the 1960s Space Race. It was even utilized during the Cuban Missile Crisis, pointed towards the Iron Curtain to provide the West with early warning of any potential Soviet missile launches.
The decision to withdraw funding has drawn sharp criticism. Professor Brian Cox, a well-known physicist, commented, "This is the culmination of many poor, rushed, and unconsulted decisions made by UKRI in the past, under the oversight of a department that no longer exists." He has urged the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to address the situation and explore options for reinstating funding for this vital facility.
